The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) announced the arrest on its social media channels at 7:13 p.m.
“A person was arrested following an investigation conducted today at the University of Ottawa concerning a suspected individual,” we can read.
“There are no injuries and public safety is no longer threatened,” we added.
The man was arrested shortly before 7 p.m. on Waller Street, downtown, near the University of Ottawa, the SPO released later in the evening in a press release.
The University of Ottawa has now lifted its lockdown. The incident is being resolved, the OPS said.
Students began leaving the buildings around 7 p.m. “We stayed inside for 2 hours,” said a student who was leaving the CRX building, “we didn’t really know what was happening.”
A lot of excitement is felt on campus, but few people know exactly what happened.

“We received an e-mail and then it continued on the different monitors and the different platforms,” explains Santiago Proteau-Sanchez, a student who was on campus at the time of the incident. We were told: “We are in lockdown, stay confined, all these things.”
“We have very little information, a lot of the things we see are the information shared on Reddit and on X,” adds Mr. Proteau-Sanchez.
The establishment had updated its alerts on its website. “A violent incident is currently taking place on campus,” it said, inviting people to avoid going there.
The students received an alert message at the beginning of the evening.
The OPS had indicated on X that its presence “is reinforced in the area of Nicholas Street and Laurier Avenue, where officers are investigating a suspicious incident.” The authorities specified that “no injuries have been reported at this time”.
According to several witnesses met on campus by The Lawthe police authorities reportedly intercepted a person. According to several, the incident took place near the CRX pavilion. Four OC Transpo special constable vehicles were on scene around 6:45 p.m.
“Ottawa police thank members of the university community and the public for their cooperation and patience,” the OPS said.
“We are aware of the concern that this incident has caused among students, faculty, staff and their loved ones.”
