Ottawa, le 9 avril 2026 – Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is working to streamline its processes and optimize its efficiency, while continuing to strengthen the International Student Program and provide excellent services to clients.
As of April 1, 2026, eligible post-secondary international students no longer need a separate work permit to participate in professional internships required by their program, such as co-op internships. Students will be able to work for employers approved by their designated educational institution as part of their program requirements.
This change simplifies the administrative process for students by requiring only one permit to complete a program of study. It does not increase the number of students authorized to work and has no impact on the number of temporary residents. It simply removes an administrative step that is no longer necessary.
Foreign students whose coop work permit application is awaiting a decision will not have to follow any steps. IRCC will withdraw all eligible and active co-op work permit applications.
Full eligibility criteria are posted on our website.
