How was the idea of A candleand what made you want to present this project to the Pégases?

Matthew:

« A candle was our end of studies project at ISART and we approached it like any other end-of-studies project. Then, we presented it to the Pegasi but we didn’t create it specifically for that reason. »

Bruno:

As Matteo said, this is our end-of-studies project and this type of project is built all year round. At ISART, students can present a game project and the idea is validated, or not, by teachers. For us, it was Clément who presented his project, it was validated and we found it cool so we wanted to participate. What attracted me personally was gameplay and style of playÂ: it’s a hack’n’slash with action, a good concept…

Matthew:

It’s true that the person who pitched the project was very nice, his vision of the game was very cool and he had already an artistic team donc on a adhéré. »

Before winning, were there times when you doubted your project?

Bruno:

Yes, of course! It’s a long production and we’ve never done such long projects at ISART. Before that, we had done 3 months of production and there it was 8 monthsHAS ! The notable moment was when we wanted to make a great end boss in the game and that raised a lot of difficulties, itwas a bit complicated and sometimes discouragingÂ: it was too hard, then not hard enough, we didn’t really know where we were breastfeeding… And finally, we decided as a team to take it off and go for something different….

Matthew:

We didn’t exactly take it away but rather we retravaillé taking what we could from the work already done to readapt it and not lose everything. »

Bruno:

Yes, there you go. We took what we already had for do not delete work that has been completed. We removed the 1 on 1 combat aspect against a large creature, we replaced it with a more complex combat than in the rest of the game so that there was a bit of that ending climax effect. It was what we wanted and we found a mechanism that works. ”

The orientation fair not to be missed!

We give you an appointment at the Studyrama exhibition for Training in Gaming, Coding, Video Games in Paris. A unique opportunity to discover the establishments and to interact with students, educational managers and specialists to ask them all your questions! Don’t miss the unique conferences on this sector with its many opportunities.

Concretely, how did the 18 of you organize yourself to work like a real studio team?

Matteo :

…There were 18 of us so we had many different professions: gameplay, game designer… It involved a lot of communication, we created a thread on Discord for example, a lot of meetings, a lot of rituals. We were trying to organize people by groups of featuresÂ: That is to say, we tried to ensure that all the people working on the same mission had their own group and it worked. And it was my role to organize all of that, as a game producer. »

What was the biggest challenge on A candleand how you overcame it?

Matteo :

« On to me of deficits throughout production but we had a very efficient team. There were small bugs at the end but nothing insurmountable or that forced us to go on a plan B. apart from the end boss. »

Bruno :

No, in the end, we had normal problems which are part of the creation of any game. »

What advice would you give to a student who does not dare to enter the video game sector or participate in a competition?

Bruno :

For those who want to do the same type of training as me, I advise test to know what we want to do precisely in the video game. You have to find out, test and find your training and your job. You have to say to yourself… “I want to make video games, ok, but what do I want to do?” and do your research work upstream.

And to participate in this type of competition, if you make a game and you are satisfied with your work, you must look at the competitions for which you are eligible and send your project. For example, it seems to me that for Pegasus, the game had to have been created as part of his work at school.

And then you have to get started! Maybe you’re not going to win, maybe not the first time because there are a lot of participants, but that doesn’t matter, show people what you can do. We send our project and see how it goes. »

Matteo :

Generally, playing a game is a team sport so I advise surround yourself with people who are in the same state of mind and who want to invest as much as you do in the long term in this type of project. At ISART, we were lucky to be in a school where all professions are represented and where we have quality trainers who helped us on the project so it’s a real plus. »
