Going to a restaurant is not like eating at home. What you think are simple habits can actually betray your level of etiquette… and your social status. According to protocol expert Mar Casas, who spoke to the magazine Au Féminincertain innocuous gestures are in reality very poorly received.

In the restaurant, posture, gestures, interactions with the staff: everything sends a subtle, but revealing message. The waiters spot these small details, well beyond dress or language. Every movement counts, even those we never think about.

For example, knowing how to indicate your availability to order can make all the difference. It is also recommended to simply close the menu and place it on the table. A discreet, elegant and respectful gesture, much more effective than gesticulating or attracting attention too visibly.

But that’s not all. Hand posture is a strong indicator of good manners. The forearms must remain relaxed on the edge of the table, without ever resting the elbows on it. The gaze is also important: it is preferable to look inside your glass or cup rather than staring at the other customers, in order to preserve everyone’s privacy.

And let’s not forget the towel. It should remain on your lap throughout the meal, placed on the seat if you get up, then slightly bent on the table at the very end. All these details, invisible at first glance, build the image you send, according to protocol expert Mar Casas.

So, what do you think?
