In the school program, there are many subjects to teach: French, languages, mathematics, physical and sports education and even history and geography. Over a 24-hour week working with students, primary school teachers teach them many concepts in different subjects.
Among them, there is this subject which is not necessarily the one which takes up the most hours in the timetable, but it is the one which, according to the teachers, gives full meaning to their educational mission. This is Moral and Civic Education (MCE). This “favorite” subject is the one where we put away the textbooks to make room for humanity and reflection. For teachers, it is a privileged moment to create a different bond with their students, outside the framework of simple transmission of academic knowledge. It is a space of freedom where children are taught to become future citizens, capable of analyzing the world around them with a critical eye.
