JAKARTA – Distance learning throughout the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will continue at least until April 17 and will be reviewed every week thereafter, taking into account the continuing conflict in the Middle East caused by the attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran at the end of February.
The UAE Ministry of Education confirmed the decision in a statement.
This decision applies to “students, as well as administrative staff, in all public and private kindergartens, nurseries and schools throughout the country to ensure the safety and well-being of all”, declared the ministry, reported by The National (31/3).
“The situation will be reviewed every week,” continued the ministry.
The government had previously forced all schools and universities to move to remote learning in early March due to Iranian missile and drone attacks. Schools and universities were then asked to start spring break a week earlier than planned on March 9.
Schools and universities in the United Arab Emirates have since operated remotely.
Since the start of the Iranian attack, the UAE air defense system has intercepted 425 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles and 1,941 drones.
The attack left two soldiers dead and a Moroccan citizen hired by the army, as well as eight victims among Pakistani, Nepalese, Bangladeshi, Palestinian and Indian nationals.
Additionally, at least 178 other people were injured in the attack.
It is known that the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, killing more than 1,340 people, including the late Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, causing tensions in the Middle East.
In response, the Land of the Mullahs retaliated with unmanned aircraft and missile attacks targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure, as well as disruptions to global markets and flights, including strict control of Strait of Hormuz, which is vital because it passes through 20% of crude oil and liquefied natural gas.
