Howie Mandel recently expressed his opinion that cancel culture was no longer a threat to comedians, encouraging them to joke freely about any topic. However, his comments were followed by an apology for remarks he made about Kelly Ripa.
During a showcase for up-and-coming comedic talent on “America’s Got Talent,” Mandel stated, “I don’t think anything is off limits,” emphasizing his belief that comedy should have no restrictions. Despite acknowledging that cancel culture had negatively impacted comedy in the past decade, Mandel believed that the tide was turning back in favor of comedians.
The 70-year-old TV personality highlighted the increasing popularity of comedy, attributing it to the healing power of laughter. Mandel mentioned that even some of the edgiest comics were selling out arenas, indicating a resurgence in the industry.
Although Mandel hoped for a comedian to win the $1 million prize on the upcoming season of “America’s Got Talent,” he recognized that certain types of comedy, like edgy or blue humor, may not be suitable for the show’s family-friendly platform. He emphasized the importance of responsible broadcasting and respecting the show’s advertisers and audience preferences.
Mandel’s optimistic comments on the future of comedy were overshadowed by a controversial interaction with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on “Live with Kelly and Mark.” After receiving backlash for his remarks, Mandel apologized on Instagram, expressing uncertainty about the necessity of his apology.
Reflecting on the incident, Mandel admitted that he regretted the apology, believing that humor should be allowed to push boundaries. Despite facing criticism, Mandel remained steadfast in his belief that making people laugh was the ultimate goal of comedy.
