With its Claude model, used by millions of people worldwide, it is now part of the global giants of artificial intelligence. The American company Anthropic is considering investments in data centers in Australia, a country considered a natural partner due to its booming activities in the AI sector, vast uninhabited lands, and immense potential in terms of renewable energies.

Following a visit to the country, the Anthropic delegation indicated that they were exploring “investment opportunities in data center infrastructure and energy across the country.” A memorandum of understanding was also formalized with the Australian government. Signed by the company’s CEO, Dario Amodei, in the capital Canberra, the document states that the company will adhere to local laws to “maintain strong social legitimacy for the investment.”

Anthropic also agreed to share its AI research and security information with Australian regulatory authorities, reflecting similar agreements reached in Japan and the UK.

However, not everyone views Anthropic’s expansion favorably. The artistic sector in Australia accuses the company and other AI giants of seeking to relax copyright laws so that conversational agents can be trained on local songs and books.

The international opening is nonetheless good news for the home of Claude, which has been facing hostility from the US government in recent weeks. Donald Trump imposed sanctions after the company refused to use its AI for surveillance of American citizens by the military.

Anthropic is the first non-foreign company to be designated as a “national security risk for supplies” by the Pentagon, leading to the cancellation of its contracts with the US government and subsequent loss of other clients.
