Australia dominated Curaçao on Tuesday, another nation qualified for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, with a score of 5-1 in a friendly match in Melbourne.
This was the Socceroos’ final home match before the World Cup, which will take place from June 11 to July 19, following their victory (1-0) against Cameroon last week.
Awer Mabil opened the scoring for the home team in the first half before Arjany Martha equalized in the 50th minute.
The Australians scored two goals in four minutes: the first, a powerful header from Parma defender Alessandro Circati, and then a curled shot from Jordan Bos, the left-back from Feyenoord Rotterdam.
Watford winger Nestory Irankunda then scored a brace towards the end of the match.
“A wonderful farewell. We wanted to win this match and finish on a positive note, and scoring five goals is a great bonus,” said Australian coach Tony Popovic.
Curaçao suffers another defeat after losing 2-0 to China, and their new Dutch coach, Fred Rutten, faces a formidable task for the first-ever World Cup participation of this Caribbean island nation, in a group that includes Germany, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador.
On the other hand, Cameroon beat China (2-0) earlier in Melbourne in another friendly match.
