On April 10, during the quarterly meeting of the Vietnamese National University of Hanoi for the second quarter of 2026, the Director of the Vietnamese National University of Hanoi, Bui The Duy, presented the appointment decision to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Oanh, Vice-Rector of Vietnam-Japan University, appointing him rector of Vietnam-Japan University, VNU Hanoi.
Previously, Professor Furuta Motoo was dismissed from his position as rector of Vietnam-Japan University by director Bui The Duy at the end of his term. He was the first rector of this university since 2016 and the first foreigner to hold this position at a public university affiliated with the Vietnam National University in Hanoi.
During his nearly ten years at the helm of the university, Professor Furuta Motoo is recognized for his significant contributions to transforming Vietnam-Japan University into a research university, promoting academic cooperation between Vietnam and Japan, and laying the foundations of the international orientation of the university in matters of education.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Oanh, the new director, born in 1979, holds a doctorate in physics, obtained at the University of Tsukuba (Japan) in 2010.
Dr. Nguyen Hoang Oanh has more than 20 years of experience in higher education. From 2000 to 2015, he taught at the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Sciences (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) and held various leadership positions, including Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Computing, Deputy Department Director, and Deputy Department Director in charge of training.
Since 2015, he has served on the Board of Trustees of Vietnam-Japan University, where he is responsible for education, science and technology. Appointed vice-rector in 2016, he has held this position since 2023. In this capacity, Dr Nguyen Hoang Oanh has carried out many important missions for the university, particularly in terms of training, research, quality assurance and development of university infrastructure in Hoa Lac, thanks to with funding from the Japanese government. He also actively contributed to the loan project for the construction of the university and worked towards the signing of the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Development of the Vietnam-Japan University.
With his management experience and long-standing commitment to the university, the new rector is expected to continue improving the quality of teaching, promoting scientific research and developing cooperation, according to leaders of the Vietnam National University in Hanoi. international.
