Surf and autism: when the ocean becomes a space of inclusion

On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, surfing reminds us that it can be much more than just a sport. For over fifteen years, the Handi Surf National Association, accredited by the French Surfing Federation, has been developing an approach where the wave becomes a tool for inclusion, well-being, and empowerment for people with disabilities, especially children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders).

The adventure began in 2008 with a first experience with autistic children, based on a simple idea: to make the ocean a mediator. The association gradually expanded its actions to all disabilities and, since 2013, has been entrusted by the French Surfing Federation with a national mission to develop the practice throughout the country.

At the heart of the Handi Surf project is a conviction: the ocean acts as a powerful physical, emotional, and behavioral lever. Thanks to adapted pedagogy, the association accompanies various audiences, including people with autism spectrum disorders. The benefits observed are numerous: better emotion management, increased autonomy, strengthened self-confidence, and the creation of social bonds in a non-stigmatizing environment.

Training is a key pillar of the model. Handi Surf has set up a specific system allowing instructors to supervise practitioners with disabilities in optimal safety and quality conditions. Deployed with the French Surfing Federation, these training sessions help spread a culture of inclusion in surf schools and structure a national network of educators and volunteers. Thanks to a strong territorial network, thousands of practitioners access surfing every year.

The association also promotes the labeling of committed clubs, actions for carers, and pathways to sports practice, contributing to changing the perception of disability.

Beyond recreation, the French Surfing Federation and Handi Surf have structured a competitive pathway in adapted para-surfing. Dedicated events are integrated into the federal calendar, with a highlight during the French Surfing Championships, held inclusively. Every year, the titles of French champions in adapted para-surfing are awarded in the Junior and Open categories. This recognition marks an important step in the development and visibility of the discipline.

In the ocean, differences fade away to make room for sharing and trust. Through its commitment to Handi Surf and the development of adapted para-surfing, the French Surfing Federation shows that a more inclusive sport is possible. One wave after another.
