Nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, of the Fidesz party, is seeking a fifth term at the head of Hungary during Sunday’s legislative elections.
After an undivided reign of 16 years, the 62-year-old sovereignist is seriously threatened by a former loyalist, Peter Magyar, 45, at the head of the center-right Tisza party. Polling institutes give him six to 16 points ahead of the head of government.
Eurosceptic Viktor Orban is today the longest-serving leader of the European Union. The one who made Hungary a laboratory of right-wing populism notably received the support of American President Donald Trump and the leader of the National Rally deputies Marine Le Pen.
