The Moroccan surfers Lilias Tebba and Teva Bouchgua have won their categories on Monday at the Royal St Andrews Rip Curl Cup in Port Alfred, South Africa, marking an unprecedented success for Moroccan surfing.
The competition, an important stage of the World Surf League qualifying circuit, brought together some of the best African and international surfers in challenging conditions at one of the region’s most technical spots.
In the women’s category, Lilias Tebba delivered a remarkable performance, characterized by great technical mastery, excellent wave reading, and consistency throughout the series. She emerged victorious in the final against South African Zoe Steyn, confirming her status among the elite of African surfing.
In the men’s category, Teva Bouchgua also delivered a high-level performance, combining power, precision, and commitment. His solid performance allowed him to clinch victory in the final against South African Connor Slijpen, demonstrating his progress on the international circuit.
According to the Royal Moroccan Surf Federation, this double victory represents a historic result for Morocco in a World Surf League qualifying competition. It confirms the rising level of Moroccan athletes and their ability to compete with the best African and international surfers.
Beyond the sporting performance, this success reflects the continuous development of Moroccan surfing, driven by increasingly structured coaching programs. It also serves as an inspiration for a new generation of surfers and a significant milestone in the international journey of both athletes.
