Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that the United States would maintain a presence following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire with Iran. Hegseth emphasized that Iran understands that this agreement ensures they will never possess a nuclear weapon.

While speaking at a briefing, Hegseth stated that the Pentagon’s job in Iran is finished, but the troops are staying put to defend, go on the offense, and restart operations if needed to ensure Iranian compliance. This came after President Trump’s announcement of a two-week suspension of bombing and attacks on Iran, with the assertion that the U.S. has achieved its military objectives.

Hegseth described the ceasefire as a chance for genuine peace and a real deal. He highlighted the success of the U.S. military operation in dismantling Iran’s military within 40 days. Hegseth welcomed the ceasefire, hoping for lasting peace.

Notably, oil prices dropped and stock prices rose in response to the ceasefire announcement. However, explosions were reported at Iran’s Lavan Island Oil Refinery, raising questions about the source of the attack.

The ceasefire extends to Israel, which supports the agreement but excludes its conflicts with Hezbollah. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed Iran’s agreement to halt defensive operations and ensure safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz.

The maritime community reported vessel activity resuming in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for international trade.

The involvement of U.S. or Israeli forces in the reported explosions remains unclear. Israel has confirmed its support for the ceasefire but excluded Hezbollah conflicts from the agreement. Iran’s commitment to halt defensive operations and ensure safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz signals progress towards peace.
