Ex-diplomat in Brussels, executive of the national-populist regime in Hungary and husband of the powerful Minister of Justice, the Peter Magyar of yesteryear was not destined to embody the number one adversary of power, whom he criticizes at each of his countless meetings. But since his spectacular rebellion in February 2024, provoked by a presidential pardon scandal in a child abuse case, the 45-year-old lawyer has become step by step the one who could well overthrow his former model, Viktor Orban, during the elections on April 12.
Bringing together left-wing liberals as well as conservatives disillusioned with the regime, the “gatherer” Magyar defends himself from being an Orban 2.0 and achieves a real political tour de force. “In two years, Magyar shook up Hungarian politics, absorbed the old left and clearly showed that he represented the only challenger to the system, analyzes political scientist Nora Schultz in the columns of the liberal weekly HVG.
