The 8 p.m.

Americans discovered the good news when they woke up on Sunday morning. “The aviator is safe and sound”, tweeted Donald Trump triumphantly, after the spectacular operation which made it possible to find a pilot wanted since the crash of his plane in Iran on Friday. The end of a hunt that had the whole country in suspense for two days. And in particular those who voted for the American president in 2024. Like in the small working-class town of Martinsburg, where two-thirds of the inhabitants voted for Trump in 2024. Many say they continue to support the war, regardless of the human cost. “Seeing our planes shot down like that, yes it’s important, but it’s nothing compared to the losses we’ve had in the past,” underlines one of them in the TF1 8 p.m. report visible at the top of this article. Or the financial cost. “I believe the security of Americans is priceless. Trump said he would go to Iran, bomb them hard and it would be over.” advance another.Â

If I had known that Trump would do all of this, I don’t think I would have voted for him.

Julia Hill, a resident of Martinsburg, West Virginia

But still no end in sight for a conflict that is costing America dearly. Julia Hill also voted for Donald Trump in 2024. But the war with Iran makes her regret her choice. “I don’t feel like this is very well thought out. If I had known Trump would do all this, I don’t think I would have voted for him,” dit-elle.

In complete contrast to candidate Trump’s campaign promises, the White House has already announced that it would cut 10% of the rest of the state budget to finance the military effort. “We have to take care of one thing, our military protection. We have a lot of people with whom we are at war. We cannot take care of social protection,” launched the American president on April 2.

Bad news for Ed Hill, a Vietnam veteran who lives on $700 a month in welfare. “I think it’s unfair. People will eventually get tired of it. Sometimes I wonder if Trump knows what he’s doing. He’s shooting himself in the foot,” he believes.
