What if we offered you bitcoin, without asking for anything in return? This is exactly what Block, Jack Dorsey’s company, is preparing. The launch of the btc.day site is scheduled for April 6, 2026, reviving a tradition born from the origins of Bitcoin. A nostalgic operation, but not trivial.
What exactly is a faucet?
A faucet is a website that distributes small amounts of cryptocurrency for free, in exchange for a simple action like solving a CAPTCHA. The idea is to lower the barrier to entry as much as possible to allow anyone to touch bitcoin without having to buy it.
The concept was born in 2010, under the leadership of Gavin Andresen, then one of the developers closest to Satoshi Nakamoto. His faucet distributed 5 bitcoins per visitor, initially financed by 1,100 BTC from his pocket. At the time, 5 bitcoins were worth a few cents at most. Today, these same 5 BTC would represent approximately 335,000 dollars. Andresen’s faucet allowed thousands of people to discover Bitcoin at a time when buying or mining it was an obstacle course.

Block relaunches the machine on April 6
Block, Jack Dorsey’s technology company (formerly Square), has announced the launch of btc.day, a new Bitcoin faucet which will open on April 6, 2026. The site is currently a waiting page with no bitcoin available.
According to the first information relayed, users will be able to receive small quantities of satoshis (the smallest unit of Bitcoin, equivalent to 0.00000001 BTC) by completing simple tasks. The amounts distributed will be incommensurate with the 5 BTC of 2010, but the stated intention remains the same: to democratize access to Bitcoin.

Why does Jack Dorsey do this?
Jack Dorsey is no stranger to the Bitcoin universe. The co-founder of Twitter, now X following the takeover by Elon Musk, is one of the most visible defenders among the big figures in tech. His company Block has already integrated the Lightning Network into Cash App, launched a hardware wallet and developed modular mining rigs to make mining accessible to the wider world. Bitcoin is not a side product for him, it is a conviction.
Relaunching a faucet in 2026 is part of this logic. Offering satoshis for free means bringing the Bitcoin experience to millions of people who would never have taken the first step. It is also a strong symbolic gesture, recalling that Bitcoin began by being given freely, before becoming an asset valued at several billion dollars. A way, for Dorsey, to re-anchor the network in its origins and perhaps accelerate its mass adoption.
