As Manchester United strive to rebuild their squad, finding a replacement for Bruno Fernandes has become a priority. Mateus Fernandes quickly caught the club’s attention with his remarkable performances, despite West Ham’s struggles at the bottom of the table.
Mateus is not the top priority, but he is being considered as a potential option as part of Manchester United’s plan to sign at least two new midfielders. Besides him, several other notable names such as Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Sandro Tonali and Carlos Baleba are also in the club’s sights.
Mateus made significant progress during his first call-up to the Portuguese national team during the FIFA Days in March, which allowed him to train with his idol, Bruno Mars. The young player himself admitted that the Manchester United captain was his biggest role model.
Conversely, Bruno’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, since he is expected to make his decision after the 2026 World Cup. Furthermore, Casemiro’s free departure this summer further accentuates the need to strengthen the midfield.
Financial pressures, including losses in excess of £100m, could force West Ham to consider selling Mateus after just one season, when he was signed for around £40m.
Besides Manchester United, Manchester City is also interested in Mateus. With the possible departure of Bernardo Silva from the Etihad Stadium, the race to secure the services of Mateus promises to be intense during the summer of 2026.
