Kenyan Football Legend Victor Wanyama Retires from Professional Football

Kenyan football icon Victor Wanyama has officially announced his retirement from the beautiful game at the age of 34, marking the end of a successful career that has lasted close to twenty years.

Wanyama, who made history by becoming the first Kenyan to grace the pitches of the English Premier League, embarked on his top-tier football journey in England when he made the switch from Celtic FC to Southampton FC in July 2013 for a reported fee of £12.5 million.

During his time at Southampton, the talented midfielder featured in 85 matches, finding the back of the net four times, before making an £11 million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur FC in June 2016.

In a heartfelt post shared on X, Wanyama expressed his thoughts on his retirement decision.

“Today, I bid farewell to the sport of football,” he stated. “Four different nations, six different clubs, a youngster from Muthurwa with ambitious dreams, carrying the pride of a nation every time I stepped onto the field.”

On the international front, Wanyama amassed an impressive 64 appearances for the Kenya national team before relinquishing his captaincy of the Harambee Stars in September 2021 following their unsuccessful qualification campaign for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Despite being called out of retirement by head coach Benni McCarthy for the 2025 African Nations Championship hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Wanyama respectfully declined the opportunity.

In a short-lived return to Scotland in March 2025, Wanyama signed a brief contract with Dunfermline Athletic FC after spending two and a half years with CF Montréal in Major League Soccer.
