WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump has announced that Pam Bondi is no longer serving as his attorney general. This marks the end of a controversial tenure by a loyalist who disrupted the Justice Department’s tradition of independence from the White House. Bondi oversaw the dismissal of many career employees and made aggressive moves to investigate individuals perceived as enemies of the Republican president.
The decision to remove Bondi comes after months of scrutiny over the Justice Department’s handling of files related to Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking investigation. Despite her close relationship with Trump, Bondi faced criticism from conservative circles. She also faced challenges in meeting Trump’s demands to prosecute his political rivals, with multiple investigations being rejected by judges or grand juries.
Bondi, who served as Florida’s attorney general, initially promised not to engage in political activities within the Justice Department. However, she quickly initiated investigations into Trump’s opponents, leading to accusations that the agency was being used for vengeful purposes to advance the president’s political agenda.
