Gardener’s tips for obtaining strawberries in quantity

Ideally, young strawberries can be planted in autumn, but also at the beginning of spring. We will then be able to obtain a first harvest at the end of May.

  1. Choose above all a well exposed place. Strawberry plants need “at least 6 hours of sunlight per day“, insists Pierre Le Cultivateur.
  2. The quality of the land is also important. It must be well drained and rich, particularly in nitrogen. So add lots of compostéventuellement de la corne broyée.
  3. Plant your feet, spacing them about 15 to 20 cm each. Don’t hesitate to place a little lavender between these plants. In fact, it will both attract pollinating insects while reinforcing the draining characteristics of the soil.
  4. Strawberries do not tolerate drought well. It is therefore necessary water them regularly. To keep the soil moist between each watering, you can cover it with a carpet of dead leaves, mulch or even cut grass.
  5. All these tips will strengthen your strawberry plants. But to have more fruit, the secret is above all to cut the flowers at the time of planting. This reflex may seem paradoxical since it is the flowers that give the fruit. But this gesture will “force the plant to produce new roots” and therefore new flowers.
