A case that hit the headlines

It all began when, a young American student aged 19, Gabrielle Vega, went on a language trip to Seville, Spain, in order to improve her Spanish before entering university. She chose the travel agency for international students Discover Excursions. The travel agency, specializing in stays in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, has a good reputation. But, at the end of her stay, in a hotel room in Tangier, Morocco, Gabrielle Vega is sexually assaulted by tourist guide Manuel Blanco Vela. Gabrielle Vega speaks out, five years later, in 2018. She denounces the attack of which she was the victim in a post on Facebook. Following this, many other women testified, also victims of the same predator. After Gabrielle Vega appeared on the Today show broadcast on NBC in the United States, there were, in total, more than 50 testimonies from women.

Manuel Blanco’s modus operandi is revealed. He gains the trust of his victims then encourages them to drink alcohol before sexually assaulting them. He acted between approximately 2009 and 2018. Manuel Blanco is also implicated in the death of a 21-year-old American student, Lauren Bajorek. Justice took 15 years to act. The attacks were committed by a Spaniard, in Morocco and Portugal, and against women enrolled in an international Spanish program. A jurisdictional imbroglio which allowed Manuel Blanco to go under the radar of justice for many years. His trial opened in January 2025. The court sentenced him to 9 years in prison.
