Ukraine has dealt a significant blow to Russia’s oil export capacity in recent days by halting Russian advances and reclaiming occupied territory. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has secured agreements with Gulf states to exchange drone expertise for joint production support. These agreements include Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and ongoing discussions with Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, and Bahrain.
The strategic production of drones has played a crucial role in Ukraine’s success against Russian forces. Commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskii noted a 55% increase in drone interceptors’ combat sorties and targets destroyed in March compared to February. These FPV drones are attributed to causing 90% of Russian casualties on the battlefield.
Furthermore, Ukraine has significantly boosted its procurement of engineering mines and ammunition for drones, aiming for substantial increases by the end of the year. These developments have shifted the conflict dynamics, resulting in Ukraine regaining 470 square kilometers of occupied territory this year, marking its first territorial gains since 2023.
The pressure on Russia continues to mount, with reports of significant losses in oil export capacity following Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s key export terminals. Ust-Luga and Primorsk, accounting for 60% of Russia’s oil export capacity, have been targeted by Ukrainian drones, leading to closures and a sharp decline in oil exports.
Additionally, Ukraine’s strategic strikes on refineries and munitions facilities in Russia have further disrupted the supply chain and production capabilities. The targeted attacks have caused significant losses in missile production capacity, forcing Russia to take drastic measures to stabilize domestic prices, such as banning refined petrol exports.
The conflict landscape has also seen evolving tactics, with Russia adapting drone strike patterns similar to those employed by Iran. Reports indicate collaborations between Russia and Iran in sharing tactics and strategies, as evidenced by Iran-backed Hezbollah adopting drone strike tactics pioneered by Ukraine and later adopted by Russia.
