The KBC Group welcomes Pelin Ilbas as Chief Economist from June 1, 2026. She will lead the group’s team of economists and help guide the economic analyzes and forecasts that support the group’s strategic choices.
Pelin Ilbas (°1980) combines a solid academic background with extensive experience in economic and political research and managerial responsibility. She succeeds Hans Dewachter, who joined the National Bank of Belgium at the beginning of the year.
Ms. Pelin holds a master’s degree in applied economics from the University of Hasselt, an Advanced Master of Science in Economics and a doctorate in economics from the Catholic University of Louvain. His doctoral thesis focused on the design of optimal monetary policy in dynamic macroeconomic models.
After her doctorate, she worked as a consultant in the monetary policy research department of Norges Bank. In 2012, she joined the National Bank of Belgium, where she has headed the Financial Economics Unit since 2017. In this position, she is responsible for economic research and policy analysis on credit developments and financing conditions, in support of policy macroprudential.
Pelin deliberately chose a role at KBC that connects deep economic expertise with leadership and social relevance. She strongly believes in analysis that is both well-founded and provides the right context, particularly in economically difficult and uncertain times. Banks are close to the real economy, and clear interpretation really makes a difference for businesses, families and policy makers.
As chief economist, reporting directly to KBC Group CEO Johan Thijs, Pelin will not only coordinate economic expertise within the group, but also contribute to the general economic debate. It will always focus on the credibility, nuance and insight of the content.
