Amazon eyes Globalstar, key satellite partner of the iPhone: Apple at the heart of the game

Amazon is reportedly in discussions to buy Globalstar, the satellite operator which notably powers emergency SOS functions on iPhone. But the presence of Apple in the capital complicates the equation, in a context where the battle for the spatial Internet is intensifying.

Globalstar, a discreet player that has become strategic

Stayed in the background for a long time, Globalstar has become an essential link in the Apple ecosystem. Since the iPhone 14, the brand has relied on its network to offer features such asEmergency SOS via satelliteallowing you to contact emergency services even without network coverage.

Apple has strengthened this partnership in 2024 by taking a 20% stake in the companyaccompanied by a massive investment of around $1.1 billion to develop infrastructure. An operation which has considerably upgraded Globalstar and strengthened its role in Apple’s connectivity strategy.

Amazon accelerates on satellite internet

For its part, Amazon is advancing its pawns in a sector that has become highly strategic. The group is currently developing its own satellite network, known as Amazon Leo, formerly Project Kuiper.

The objective is of course to rivalize with Starlinkthe SpaceX constellation, already well established on the market. With this in mind, the acquisition of Globalstar would offer Amazon a immediate access to existing infrastructureas well as frequencies and chords already in place.

Apple, unexpected arbiter of the case

But the operation is far from simple. Apple’s participation in Globalstar necessarily requires tripartite negotiations. The Cupertino firm, now technologically and financially linked to the company, cannot be bypassed.

Beyond the simple capital issue, the entire strategy around satellite communications is at stake. Apple has built part of its differentiating advantage on these functionalities, integrated directly into its devices, notably on iPhone and Apple Watch.

A strategic battle around space

This possible takeover is part of a broader trend: the rise of space infrastructure in the strategies of technological giants. Access to global connectivity, independent of terrestrial networks, is becoming a key issue, both for general public uses and for professional applications.
