Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has removed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, disrupting military leadership during the conflict in Iran.
Hegseth requested George’s immediate retirement, as confirmed by a Department of Defense official to MS NOW on Thursday. Christopher LaNeve, a former military aide to Hegseth, is set to serve as the acting chief of staff.
CBS was the first to report the removal. The Pentagon also announced George’s departure in a social media post on Thursday, providing no further details.
“The Department of War appreciates General George’s years of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement,” said Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell in a statement.
In addition to George, two other Army generals were also dismissed in the recent military shakeup, according to two anonymous defense officials who spoke to The Washington Post. They are Gen. David Hodne, who headed the Army Transformation and Training Command, and Maj. Gen. William Green Jr., the 26th chief of chaplains.
