Amid what has become the longest partial government shutdown in U.S. history, Australians continue to assess President Donald Trump’s job performance – even as there are signs the standoff could soon come to an end. The president’s approval rating has declined in recent polls as he navigates the prolonged shutdown, tensions with Iran and rising gas prices. The partial shutdown – driven by a funding stalemate over the Department of Homeland Security – reached 44 days on Sunday, March 30, surpassing the previous longest lapse. The impasse has disrupted airport operations nationwide, with staffing shortages among Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers, many of whom have gone without pay during the shutdown.
