With the advent of AI, NPUs (Neural Processing Units) have taken a prominent place in our processors and graphics cards. Designed to process artificial intelligence functions locally, they are now available in the Windows 11 Task Manager for detailed monitoring of their performance.

AI components scrutinized by Windows 11
With the latest preview version (n°26300.8142) of the Windows 11 Insider program, Microsoft has fixed a few bugs, but not only that. Indeed, testers discovered something new on the Task Manager side, with improved monitoring of the hardware use of essential PC components (processor, RAM, storage, etc.).
“Now when you navigate to the Processes tab in the new Task Manager, you can add new columns for NPU Usage and NPU Engineâ€reports the site Neowin. To do this, simply right-click on a column header and select the display options related to the NPU.
The Details page also has optional columns titled NPU Dedicated Memory and NPU Shared Memory to give you better visibility into how workloads are using NPU resources.

This is a significant addition for users using AI functions locally (via third-party applications or tools integrated into Windows 11), because the latter regularly request the NPU. This more in-depth monitoring makes it possible to keep an eye on their consumption and more easily identify possible system slowdowns.
But Task Manager doesn’t stop there. Microsoft highlights that a new Isolation column can be enabled in the Processes and Details pages. It allows to “see which applications are running in an AppContainerâ€. A development that will delight developers, because they will be able to instantly check the resources consumed by their software running in a sandbox, this secure environment isolated from the rest of the system.
