Samsung is updating its TizenOS system to add support for Google Cast in 2023 and beyond. The integration of Google Photos is also in progress and will make it easy to view and share your memories on Samsung televisions.

Samsung has been the global leader in the TV industry since 2006 and occupies an undisputed number 1 position in the television market, both in volume and value, with a market share of approximately 28.3% in 2024 according to Omdia.

Like any leader, the brand has long tried to push its in-house solutions, such as Smart View, its competitor to the very popular Google Cast, which both allow the same thing: sharing content from a smartphone to a larger screen wirelessly and in a few clicks.

Samsung has finally decided to update its operating systems, TizenOS and OneUI, to add Google Cast. The update applies to TVs released from 2023 onwards.

A much wider aperture than Smart View

Google Cast works on TizenOS exactly as you would expect: it allows you to share all kinds of content (images, videos and music) from an Android device, ChromeOS, or even from a Chrome browser on any device.

This will significantly expand the number of devices capable of sharing content with a Samsung television, since, to operate Smart View, Samsung’s technology, you had to use a Galaxy device.

Google Photos is also coming

At the same time, Google Photos, the cloud storage application for your photos taken on a smartphone, will also be supported on Samsung televisions. The Korean brand announced it last December and the deployment is therefore finally happening.

The photos will apparently be divided into three categories, described as such by Google on its blog:

  • “Daily Plus” rank: you can scroll through a selection of your memories which update automatically.
  • “Daily Plus” app launcher: When you click on the Google Photos app, you can view your memories in full screen.
  • “Daily Board” widget: You can also view your memories on the widget.

If you want to hide certain photos, a guest mode is available to automatically filter out the shots you don’t want to show to everyone.
