Gas prices are soaring across the nation, placing additional strain on household budgets amidst escalating global oil costs linked to tensions with Iran. According to AAA, the national average for regular gasoline hit $4.06 per gallon on April 1, marking a $1.08 increase from the previous month. The West Coast faces the steepest prices, with California and Washington reaching $5.89 and $5.35 per gallon, respectively. On the East Coast, prices are approaching or exceeding $4 in multiple areas, including $4.19 in Washington, D.C., and $3.98 in New York. In the Midwest, Illinois stands out at $4.25 per gallon, while Southern states like Texas and South Carolina offer cheaper alternatives. Diesel prices, closely tied to industry and freight, have also spiked to $5.49 per gallon, up $1.73 since the previous month, reflective of global energy disruptions amid the ongoing conflict in Iran.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, suggested that while gas prices may eventually decrease, a return to pre-war levels remains unlikely for several months due to the time needed to rebuild global inventories. De Haan noted that seasonal factors, such as rising demand leading into summer and refinery maintenance, could further drive prices up. As the midterm elections approach, the escalating energy and housing costs pose a potential challenge for President Donald Trump’s promise of affordability for American families.
