47 closures for 13 openings, i.e. 34 positions
which will be returned to the Ministry… The diocesan management of Catholic education in Morbihan has just announced the list of openings and closures for the first level at the start of the next school year. A measure which can be explained by the drop in the number of students enrolled in nursery and elementary classes. Catholic education will in fact have just under 30,000 students, or 1,000 fewer than at the start of the 2025 school year.
The main reason is demographic: “The number of children aged 3 to 10 continues to decrease significantly in Morbihan,” analyzes David Thomas, deputy to the diocesan director. Brittany is very impacted and Morbihan is the second department in France, after the North, to lose the most students. Certainly, the population is increasing in Morbihan but not old enough to have children.” Another reason is put forward: the redistribution of resources within the network of private education under contract in France.
The diocesan management notes a certain number of openings in several establishments on the coast and in rural areas. “This allows us to see a clearing in this cloudy context,” says David Thomas.
