The Liers et Lemps college, in Grand-Lemps in Bièvre, is one of the establishments participating in the Space Buzz project this year. 32 middle school students are following this educational program which raises children’s awareness of climate change through the emotions and dizziness that comes from seeing the Earth in the Universe.

The first three sessions of the program allow students to discover that space is filled with billions of very varied objects, generally called stars, but that the distances are so great between them that the Universe ultimately seems quite empty.

To represent and remember some of these stars, the third session begins with a story, a story told by the teacher or facilitator and illustrated by a mixture of elements scattered over the words, on the floor among the children.

A black sheet is placed on the floor, the children are sitting cross-legged around it, the lights in the classroom are dimmed…

“One more night, and I can’t sleep… I look at the sky through my window, dreaming of the treasures that the Universe contains. In the darkness, I notice a band whiter than the rest of the sky… I go get my telescope to take a closer look…

This is how the tale begins., then as the story progresses, the black sheet is adorned with a white fabric, turned in a spiral, the Milky Way… white stars arrive… then red and yellow and blue… The Sun arrives, the planets too, they are joined by the asteroids, numerous in the Solar System. Other objects like moons, shooting stars and comets are mentioned in the story.

The final picture is very successful for Liers et Lemps college!

The project continues in the classes of the Grand Lemps. On May 5, classes will be welcomed to Cosmocité, at Pont de Claix, for a special session at the planetarium. They will find the space objects covered at school projected under the dome of the planetarium and will experience the emotion of seeing the Earth from space, like exploring astronauts…
