Apple introduced a new version of its AirPods Max earlier this month. To everyone’s surprise, the headphones have evolved, after more than 5 years without renewal. The H2 chip notably came to bring a performance gain, whether on audio quality or even noise reduction.
But this new generation has not erased all the faults of the AirPods Max. We have listed in this article, 5 problems already present on the first version, which are still there, despite the improvements made by Apple.
Same design
This is the point that jumps out at first when you look at the AirPods Max 2. It has exactly the same design as the first generation. The two devices are not similar, they are identical in every way. Apple hasn’t changed anything, neither the aesthetic components, nor even the color.

The AirPods Max recipe still works just as well, but we would have liked a few risks, a few modifications, here and there. Many have criticized the weight of the AirPods Max, but nothing has been done on this second version to reduce it.
Lossless audio, yes but only wired
To listen to music in the best possible quality, you need to use a cable. This is the sad truth when we talk about the AirPods Max 2. The headphones, presented by Apple as a wireless device, only deliver 100% of their capabilities with a cable.
Without a wired connection, you can’t enjoy lossless audio. This was already a big flaw on the AirPods Max when it was released in 2020. It’s a huge downside for this second version, six years later.
A price still too high?
Too much point that caused a lot of ink to flow in 2020: the price. The AirPods Max was sold for €579. Few were then ready to spend €600 for headphones, an accessory. With this second version, Apple could have lowered the price of its product, but Apple did nothing. There are no discounts to report on this version.

As Marquess Brownlee explains very well, the AirPods Max 2 is designed by Apple as a product made to “complete” an existing Apple ecosystem. It completes a range of products for customers who already have several Apple devices. A Conversely, the MacBook Neo is a real flagship product, designed to bring users into the Apple ecosystem.
Same storage box
Another big flaw of the AirPods Max 2; it still has a storage box, and not a charging box. Concretely when you slip the headset into its case, it will not recharge, it will not even turn off. This is a deliberate choice on Apple’s part.
It was already difficult to understand with the first AirPods Max, but many thought that Apple had learned, had understood its mistake. But in reality, Apple continues to use this same system, although highly criticized.
No big changes to the sound
This is not the point that gets talked about the most, and yet it is extremely important. Apple has just delivered a second version of the AirPods Max, without the slightest change in components. Technically the two helmets are identical. The H2 chip provides a power boost, but it is almost a software development.

The sound quality of the device is still the same. The AirPods Max 2 has the same components with 40mm drivers. Taking into account the 5 and a half years between the first and second generations, a change of components seems like the least of things.
