A first tobacco-free campus in Caen
Last Friday, the first tobacco-free campus was inaugurated in Caen. This is the one at the health training and research center. A strong message from the management of the establishment.
Désormais, un petit écriteau «Campus sans tabac» hangs at the entrance to the campus. Students will therefore no longer be able to smoke around the establishment, this is the new rule.
This building hosts all training related to the field of health. This is a strong message because we know that tobacco is the leading cause of preventable mortality, and many students smoke.
The goal is also to raise awareness among students, who are future health professionals, on this subject. Smoking is therefore prohibited around but also to vape.

This concerns students but also teachers. No one should smoke around this campus anymore. A rule that will not be easy to respect for some who will therefore have to move away.
Alert students to dangers
Obviously, before implementing this new rule, the university consulted students. And according to the university, more than 700 responses were recorded on this subject. And 78% of participants said they were in favor in a non-smoking area.
And for non-smokers, this is good news because this space means that there is no longer any passive smoking. Now smokers must go to a special area to smoke.
A demarcated area on the ground several tens of meters from the entrance. According to an internal survey, there is one smoker in 6 students on this campus of the University of Caen.
Which still represents 1000 students. And for the director, these figures are too high. We remind you that tobacco represents 7 million deaths each year worldwide.
Of course, however, there will be no sanctions for student smokers. On the other hand, some young people will be elected “étudiants relais-santé » and will go see smokers and explain to them the principle of this device.
And the University of Caen does not want to stop there. She wants to extend this system to all her buildings. And this in the coming years. In total, the university has 13 campuses.
Even though there are more and more young people smoking puffs or electronic cigarettes, there is often just as much nicotine in these objects. The goal is therefore to prevent vaping as much as smoking.
The University of Caen plans to put the same system in place at the Damigny campus, in Alençon, in Orne. The goal? Generalize as much as possible to alert students to the risks of tobacco.
