The government of the Republic of Maldives has officially withdrawn the candidacy of Argentina’s Virginia Gamba for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), lending its unwavering support to former Senegalese President Macky Sall.

This strategic turnaround in the Indian Ocean archipelago comes at the very moment when the African Union (AU) is preparing to make the former Senegalese head of state its continental consensus candidate via the “silence procedure”. By withdrawing Virginia Gamba (current UN special representative for children and armed conflicts), the Maldives makes it possible to clear the international path for Macky Sall and consolidate the bloc of Southern countries (Africa-Asia) before the deadline for submitting applications set for April 1, 2026 in New York.

The rallying of the Maldives demonstrates the strength of Macky Sall’s diplomatic network and the echo of his leadership well beyond the borders of the African continent. This Asian-African alliance offers an ideal launching pad for the Senegalese candidate before beginning the major oral discussions and political negotiations for the week of April 20, 2026 in front of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.
