Pay for Netflix in a 100% European way? The alternative to Visa and Mastercard tackles the subject

Wero is often summarized as a simple payment system between individuals, like Lydia. This is what the service offers today, but this European alternative to Mastercard, Visa and PayPal has great ambitions.

In 2026, Wero will become a real payment system in several brands such as Orange, Leclerc and Air France. The service is already preparing its next evolution: recurring payment for subscriptions.

A universal European solution

As a reminder, the Wero service is driven by a large grouping of European banks to offer an alternative sovereign system to the American giants.

Ultimately, the promise is to allow you to pay for your groceries in store (by QR Code or contactless with your smartphone), on the Internet with a simple button ” Pay with Wero » or exchange money between friends only with a phone number.

When EPI, the consortium behind Wero, announced the addition of Orange among the compatible stores in 2026, we asked it the question of subscriptions. For the moment, the plan is to allow the payment of smartphones or accessories through Wero, when the subscription continues to be paid by an IBAN direct debit. The EPI managers then told us that this was a first step before the arrival of the subscription. It seems that this file is moving forward, according to the latest statements from Chris Scheuermann, in charge of strategy at EPI.

Pay Netflix with Wero

In a series of interviews, Chris Scheuermann explicitly talks about adding Wero to Netflix.

Other deployment scenarios are planned for 2026. Wero should then be able to be integrated with subscription services such as Netflix, i.e. manage recurring payments. Food marketers, in particular, are likely already knocking on the door, eager to integrate Wero directly into their own applications. Internally, this is seen as a move towards stationary commerce, i.e. towards the point of sale.

However, you must remain calm in the face of this type of statement. Here, the EPI above all indicates its intention to offer the possibility of paying for a subscription with Wero. She explicitly mentions Netflix as a possibility, but without committing to a date.

We imagine that if EPI had officially signed a distribution agreement for its solution with Netflix, there would be a much more enthusiastic press release surrounding the announcement, rather than a simple statement in an interview.

The fact remains that the person concerned, in his statements, leaves very little room for the conditional. This suggests that discussions could be very well advanced.

Contactless payment in 2027

Payment by Wero in store will initially be made through a QR Code system to be scanned. It is a system already used and very popular around the world, particularly in Asia through WeChat.

In Europe, with Google Pay and Apple Pay, we have become accustomed to contactless payment by NFC. Chris Scheuermann promises that it will be possible to pay contactless directly with Wero from 2027. Enough to offer a real alternative solution to Visa and Mastercard, when you cannot use the French CB solution.
