As the next school year approaches, the Idekia school is facing a worrying situation. This suppression, if it were to be confirmed, would have direct and significant repercussions on the quality of teaching and the learning conditions of students, indicate the demonstrators.
According to them, the first consequence would be the increase in the number of students per class. Overcrowded classes make daily management more difficult, both for teachers and students. “With fewer staff, teachers will have less availability to support each student,” specify educational leaders. However, some benefit from special support at Idekia, whether to consolidate knowledge, overcome difficulties or, on the contrary, deepen their knowledge. Reducing human resources amounts to weakening this essential support.”
The teaching of Basque menacé
Beyond general learning conditions, it is also the teaching of the Basque language which could be impacted. At Idekia, this learning occupies an important place in the educational journey. The elimination of the half-position would inevitably lead to a reduction in the time devoted to the Basque language, endangering its transmission and development within the establishment.
In a territory where the Basque language constitutes a strong cultural heritage, this prospect arouses real concern. “Maintaining this half-position therefore appears to be a necessity. The quality of teaching, the well-being of students, but also the preservation of a local cultural identity are at stake,” this is the summary of the situation in Ustaritz.
