In business, the Mac is doing well and is popular with users (unlike Windows)

Omnissa, formerly VMware EUC, is a company that manages the IT infrastructure of thousands of companies. She has just published her Omnissa State of Digital Workspace 2026a report that condenses data on millions of enterprise devices, with interesting information about Apple.

The report shows that Apple devices are generally older than Windows PCs, implying that renewal is slower (and therefore probably Macs are more reliable). They indicate that 23% of Macs in the companies tracked are more than three years old and 11% are more than five years old (a priori Intel Macs). On the Windows side, there are only 9% of PCs over three years old and 2% over five years old. A difference which can also come from the price: the renewal cost is probably lower on the PC side.

In the iOS world, the difference is less marked: there are 16% of iPhones over three years old (as with Android) and 13% which are over five years old (6% under Android).

Apple chips largely in the majority

The report shows that Apple chips are in the majority (79%), which makes sense: Apple began its transition at the end of 2020 and companies rarely have computers that are more than five years old (we saw this above). In the same vein, Intel remains in the majority in companies, well ahead of AMD (93% against 6%). Qualcomm and other CPU makers are around 1%.

Quite logically, the vast majority of business Macs have 256 or 512 GB of storage, and – more surprisingly – 16 to 64 GB of RAM.

We learn, for example, that the most popular Macs in the high-tech sector are the MacBook Pro, well ahead of the MacBook Air and the others (Mac mini, iMac, etc.). In companies linked to services, the gap is less significant, while in education, it is the MacBook Air which is rather put forward.

Up-to-date software

The report shows that browsing is split between Chrome (43%), Edge (43%) and others (including Safari) at 16%. In terms of operating systems, Mac users generally have the latest version (77%) or the previous version (12%). This is significantly more than under Windows, where only 51% of companies are a priori under Windows 11. Under iOS, it’s the same thing: 81% with the latest version, 7% with the previous one and the rest with an old version. On Android, the latest version is only 10% and the previous one is 9%.

We also learn that around 25% to 30% of companies do not encrypt computer data (23% in the banking sector, 28% in the media).

Windows est mal noté

65% of macOS users have a good opinion of the computer, compared to 54% on Windows. But it is in the bad opinion that the difference is wide: 5% do not like their Mac, compared to 15% with a PC. The report also indicates that Windows causes 3.1 times more forced shutdowns, 2.2 times more apps that crash and 7.5 times more apps that freeze.

iPad et Apple Watch

Note that iOS and iPadOS devices are also widely used. In the field of health and transport, market shares are of the same order as Android (8% for iOS, 9% for iOS in health, for example).

For iPads, the transport world largely prefers the iPad mini, while in sales or education, the classic iPad is preferred. In the world of work, the iPad Pro has clearly not found its place.

We also learn that the Apple Watch finds its place in businesses, particularly in transport. It’s obviously a useful tool for quick notifications and security (with two-factor authentication) but also to allow employees to not have to take out a smartphone.
