It’s a day of national celebration in the Democratic Republic of the Congo! After their victory in the playoff against Jamaica (1-0 a.e.t.), the Leopards secured a historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup, over 50 years since their only participation in 1974.

An exceptional decision to celebrate the victory

To allow the Congolese population to celebrate this achievement in “unity, fervor, and national pride”, the Ministry of Employment and Labor made an exceptional decision. Thus, Wednesday, April 1, 2026, was declared a public holiday and paid throughout the territory.

This measure is part of the “will” of President Felix Tshisekedi and Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka to properly celebrate the historic qualification of the Leopards.

A hard-fought success

Pushed into extra time by a valiant Jamaican team, Sebastien Desabre’s men finally made the difference with a goal from Axel Tuanzebe from a corner (1-0, 101st minute).

A hard-fought success, rewarding the efforts and hard work of the players and technical staff since the beginning of the qualifications in November 2024.

A historic qualification for the Leopards

Over 50 years after their only participation in a World Cup, in 1974, DR Congo will finally return to the most prestigious football tournament. A qualification that echoes a true renaissance for Congolese football.

Carried by the unwavering support of their fans, the Leopards knew how to step up in crucial moments to write a new chapter in the history of African football.

This public holiday is an opportunity for a whole nation to celebrate the consecration of a team that has managed to unite the nation behind its success.
