Released after years of waiting, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal has established itself as the number 1 film on Netflix. Worn by Cillian Murphy, this extension of the cult series fascinates as much as it divides, despite impressive audiences.

Dominating the Netflix top 10 is often a short-lived feat, as the new releases come one after the other at a breakneck pace. Yet, Peaky Blinders : L’immortel succeeds where many fail: the film remained number 1 for ten consecutive days, already accumulating nearly 44.7 million views on the platform. A solid launch which confirms the immense anticipation surrounding the return of Tommy Shelby.
A highly anticipated return and immediate success for the film Peaky Blinders
Direct sequel to the cult series created by Steven Knight, Peaky Blinders : L’immortel marks the big return of Cillian Murphy in a role that has become iconic. After six seasons and 36 episodes, this film was to offer a worthy conclusion to the dark and stylized universe of Birmingham.
Directed by Tom Harper, the project was long-awaited: almost four years have passed since the broadcast of the last episode, in April 2022. A wait which has obviously not dampened the fans. In its first three days, the film recorded 25.3 million views, confirming immediate popularity.
But what happened next was more surprising: audiences slowed down with 19.4 million additional views over the following seven days. A sign that the majority of the public rushed to the release, without the usual snowball effect.

A triumph but mixed reactions
If the figures are impressive, the critical reception is more nuanced. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a solid 90%, evidence of some positive consensus. But on the spectator side, particularly on Allociné, opinions are more divided with an average of around 3 out of 5.
Many still praise the careful aesthetic and the performance of Cillian Murphy, but regret a pace considered too slow and a sometimes excessive emotion. “I must admit a certain disappointment: it’s still very beautiful and I still love Cillian Murphy as much. But what pathos! It’s slow, not very rhythmic, Tommy plays a bit of a Drama queen and it even becomes quite boring“, summarizes a representative comment.
This contrast between massive success and mixed reception does not prevent Peaky Blinders : L’immortel to reign supreme on Netflix. It now remains to be seen which film will manage to steal first place and whether this universe will continue to expand with the new projects already mentioned.
