This is a sequence which alone sums up the current weaknesses of Windows Update. A few days after suspending KB5079391, its optional March 2026 update for Windows 11, Microsoft is releasing an out-of-band patch named KB5086672.
This new version normally provides a solution to the installation problem which blocked some PCs suffering from the error message 0x80073712. At the same time, it deploys the improvements initially planned in the update.
On March 20, Microsoft promised to raise the quality level of Windows 11, with an emphasis on performance, reliability and experience. Seeing the publisher immediately publish an emergency patch to repair a problematic Preview gives its promises a bitter taste.
KB5086672 replaces KB5079391 and fixes error 0x80073712
In its documentation the giant indicates that KB5086672 is an out-of-band cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. It brings together the contributions of update KB5079473 of March 10 but also those of KB5085516 of March 21 and KB5079391 of March 26. For the corrective part, the problem affecting certain devices which failed to install KB5079391 with the message indicating that update files were missing or causing a problem, accompanied by the code 0x80073712 is normally resolved.
Who can install KB5086672 and how to get it
KB5086672 is distributed through the Windows Update service to PCs running Windows 11 that have installed KB5079473 or a later update. It can also be retrieved manually from the Microsoft Update catalog. Machines with the “Get the latest updates as soon as they become available†option enabled may see it appear automatically, while others must initiate the installation from Windows Update or via manual download.
