Good morning ! The Morning TF1

After several months marked by cold, rain and gray weather, spring has made its comeback. And with him, he brought a few rays of sunshine and sweetness. A boon for gardening enthusiasts, who will be able to start growing squash, zucchini and cucumbers. Because, yes, like every year, cucurbits will be the stars of the gardens this summer. These are vegetables that offer good yields and are also particularly fresh and tasty on our plates. But be careful, even if cucurbits are simple to cultivate, it is important to respect a few basic rules to succeed in their cultivation.

Cucumbers, squash, zucchini: how to plant the seeds correctly?

As Pierre the cultivator explains in “Bonjour! La Matinale TF1”, if you want to succeed in your planting, you can sow seeds now, taking care to plant them with a very particular sense. “There’s a little point and a rounded part. The little pointy part is where the root will come out and start to grow. You have to plant the pointy part down to make things easier.”explains our journalist, specifying that it was necessary to start the culture in individual cups or in honeycomb plates. “In the earth, it’s too cold at the moment”, adds our columnist.

To optimize cultivation, the expert recommends using buckets approximately seven centimeters deep, which you will fill with universal potting soil, mixed with compost. Then you need to plant the seed by pushing it down half a centimeter. “We can put one or two seeds per bucket… And then we water”continues Pierre the farmer.

Cucurbits: first harvests at the end of June?

The gardener advises sowing at least two zucchini plants, two cucumber plants and two squash plants in pairs. “They will develop male flowers and female flowers. And you need cross-pollination to have enough vegetables,” declares Pierre the farmer. Once the seeds are correctly planted, all you have to do is place the plants in a relatively warm place (a temperature of 15 degrees is required for the seed to germinate) then water them regularly, so that the substrate is always moist. “We transplant into the ground in mid-May and we harvest the first zucchini at the end of June. We will have to harvest the small zucchini, we don’t wait for them to grow,” concludes the expert.
