You dream ofSoutheast Asia without the Thai crowd or the Japanese budget? THE Laos travel 2026 may be your best option this year. Except that since your last research, quite a few things have changed: a digital arrival card is now compulsory, a high-speed train crosses the country from north to south in a few hours, and the Laotian government is targeting 6 million visitors this year – including 2 million Chinese. Good news: the daily budget remains below €50. We explain everything to you, step by step.
What has changed in Laos since 2024
First thing to know: since the September 1, 2025all foreign travelers must complete the LDIF digital arrival card (Lao Digital Immigration Form) before entering the country. Don’t panic, it’s free and can be done online in 5 minutes on the official Laotian immigration portal.
In practice, complete the form at least 3 days before your arrival. You will receive a QR code To be presented directly to immigration. For now, the system works at 4 points d’entrée : Vientiane (Wattay), Luang Prabang and Paksé airports, plus the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge No. 1. Extension to all border crossings is planned for 2026.
Small reminder: the LDIF does not replace the visa. The French need a visa à l’arrivée (40 $valid for 30 days) or an e-visa obtained in advance on laoevisa.gov.la. Bring a photo ID and extra dollars – card payments are not accepted. A $1 surcharge may apply after hours (before 8 a.m., after 4 p.m., weekends and holidays).
The China-Laos train, the real upheaval of 2026
This is THE revolution that is transforming travel in Laos. There Vientiane-Boten high-speed line (414 km, open at the end of 2021) now connects the three essential stages of the country in record time. Before, it was a 10-hour bumpy drive between Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Today ? 52 minutes by train to Vang Vieng, then 50 minutes additional flights to Luang Prabang.
And the budget in all this? This is where it gets interesting:
- Vientiane → Vang Vieng : 171,000 LAK in 2nd class (~8 €), 273,000 LAK in 1st class (~13 €)
- Vang Vieng → Luang Prabang : comparable price, count 8 to 10 € in 2nd class
- Vientiane – Boats (full journey to the Chinese border): $35-50 depending on class
The tip: tickets are on sale 3 days before departure and leave very quickly, especially on weekends and in high season. Download the app LCR Ticket to book as soon as they open, or go through platforms like 12Go Asia or Baolau if you prefer to secure your places in advance (at a slight extra cost). Five trains run in each direction each day – four rapids (160 km/h) and one omnibus (120 km/h).
Good to know: from Boten, you can continue towards Kunming and China (~10 hours by train, 2nd class at 542 CNY or ~70 €). The French benefit from the 30-day Chinese visa exemption until December 31, 2026. A Laos-China combo by train, it’s tempting, right?

10-day itinerary: the trio Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang
No need to complicate life for a first stay. The classic trio works perfectly, especially since the train makes movement super smooth.
Days 1-2: Vientiane. The quietest capital in Southeast Asia. Visit the Pha That Luang (the golden national monument), the Wat Si Saket and its thousands of Buddha statues, stroll through the morning market and enjoy the banks of the Mekong at sunset. The atmosphere is gentle, without pressure.
Days 3-5: Vang Vieng. Fast train from Vientiane (52 min). The former party capital has reinvented itself as a nature destination. Kayak on the Nam Songcave exploration Tham Jangswimming in the Blue Lagoon, and for the more adventurous, hot air ballooning at sunrise. Three days are enough to enjoy it without running.
Days 6-9: Luang Prabang. Fast train from Vang Vieng (50 min). The jewel of Laos, classified UNESCO and recently voted one of the most beautiful cities in Asia by Condé Nast Traveler. Don’t miss the almsgiving of the monks at dawn (respect the distance and silence), the turquoise waterfall of Kuang Si (entry 20,000 LAK or ~€1, allow half a day), the temples of the old town and the night market. A day cruise on the Mekong completes the stay perfectly.
Day 10: Departure. Flight from Luang Prabang or return by train to Vientiane.
Our advice: if you have 3 more days, add Nong Khiaw to the north (mountain atmosphere, river, absolute calm) or the 4000 islands to the south, accessible from Paksé. Need inspiration? Discover our 4 circuits to explore the jewels of Laos.

Realistic budget for a French person in 2026
Let’s be concrete. Here’s what it really costs:
- Return flight Paris-Laos : €600 to €800 with a stopover (via Bangkok, Singapore or Hanoi). No direct flight – the best options are via Vietnam Airlines, Thai Airways or Singapore Airlines. From Lyon, Marseille or Bordeaux, add €50 to €100 for the connection.
- Budget backpacker : 30-50 €/day (hostel 5-10 €, street food 1-3 €, train between cities for a few euros)
- Budget intermédiaire : 50-100 €/day (charming hotel, varied restaurants, guided excursions)
- Total budget estimated over 10 days : 1 300 à 2 000 € vol compris
Laos remains one of the Most Affordable Destinations in Southeast Asiasignificantly cheaper than Thailand or Vietnam for accommodation and catering. The local currency is Laotian kip (LAK), but the Thai baht and the US dollar are accepted almost everywhere.
The good plan: book your flight 3 to 4 months in advance for the best offers, aiming for departures in October or November. Be careful, however, of air disruptions: alternative routes to Asia may affect prices and itineraries this summer.
When to Leave (And Why Crowds Are a Game Changer)
The best period for a Laos trip 2026: novembre à février. Dry season, pleasant temperatures (15-28°C in the north), clear skies. October is a great compromise if you like lush post-monsoon vegetation with fewer tourists.
Àéviter: February-March (agricultural burns, smoky air in the north) and May to September (monsoon, daily rains).
But here’s what changes in 2026: the Chinese tourism boom. With 2 million Chinese tourists expected this year (compared to 1.1 million in 2025), mainly via train, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng are filling up noticeably. Family guesthouses are gradually giving way to hotels. As a reminder, Laos welcomed 4.6 million visitors in 2025, already exceeding its annual objectives.
Our advice: to find authenticity, favor the steps out of the train circuit : Nong Khiaw, the Bolaven plateau or the 4000 islands in the south of the country.
How to get there from France
For travelers departing from Paris CDGno direct flight to Laos. The best options with a stopover: Vietnam Airlines (via Hanoi, allow ~15h), Thai Airways (via Bangkok, ~14h) ou Singapore Airlines (via Singapore, ~6 p.m.). Budget: €600 to €800 round trip by booking 2 to 3 months in advance.
From Lyon, Marseille or Bordeauxadd a connection in Paris or Amsterdam (KLM via Bangkok). Additional budget: €50 to €100.
The adventurous alternative: join Bangkok and fly lowcostthen take the train de nuit Bangkok-Nong Khai (~€15) and cross the Friendship Bridge towards Vientiane. It’s longer, but it’s an experience in itself – and you can take the opportunity to combine it with Vietnam without a visa for 45 days.
For travelers combining China and Laos, the train Kunming-Vientiane (~10h) crosses spectacular landscapes between the mountains of Yunnan and Laotian tropical forests. All formalities for China, Laos and Georgia are detailed in our dedicated guide.
