On Friday, April 24, 2026 at 8 pm, Cinema Les Arcades in Val-de-Reuil, the Val-Mix-Cité association and the SCD Nor (Solidarity Against Sickle Cell Disease in Normandy) are organizing an evening around the documentary “Beyond the Pain” directed by Sara Adjaho.
The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Dr. Cécile Dumesnil, a hematologist-oncologist pediatrician at the Rouen University Hospital.
Synopsis: Sickle cell disease, sometimes called “pain disease”, is characterized by an abnormality in hemoglobin causing a deformation of red blood cells giving them a sickle shape. The most widespread blood disease in the world, particularly in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, sickle cell disease is the most common rare genetic disease in France (with 13,129 people affected in May 2024). It remains relatively unknown, both to the general public and healthcare professionals, to the point of being considered socially invisible by those affected. Some social science studies have highlighted the scarcity of public policies concerning the disease and emphasized that it is often associated with marginalized groups in the global North. This has led to discussions of the construction of an ethnic disease.
