At Thien Truong Stadium, the Vietnamese national team delivered an enthusiastic performance and secured a convincing victory against Malaysia. This result extends to 13 the number of consecutive victories for coach Kim Sang-sik’s team, a new record in Southeast Asian football.
The last time the Vietnamese national team did not win was in a 1-1 draw against the Philippines in the group stage of the 2024 ASEAN Cup. Subsequently, Coach Kim’s team went on to achieve three victories in the tournament, against Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand.
After winning the 2024 ASEAN Cup, the Vietnamese national team followed up with a victory against Cambodia in a friendly match, followed by two consecutive wins against Laos and Nepal. It is worth noting that Kim’s team benefited from a 3-0 victory awarded by the AFC against Malaysia in the away match, due to an opponent’s naturalization rule violation, before securing a 3-1 victory in the return match on the evening of March 31.
In the aforementioned series of matches, the Vietnamese national team scored 37 goals and conceded only 7, an impressive figure over the past two years.
Before the match, Coach Kim admitted that the Vietnamese team was determined to win even though they had already secured their place in the next round.
“Qualified for the 2027 Asian Cup, we want to win this match and also consider it as a rehearsal for our future goals and next year’s final phase. The team’s main goal is victory,” Coach Kim declared.
Previously, the longest winning streak of the Vietnamese national team was 6 matches, against Afghanistan, Singapore, India, the Philippines, Laos, and Malaysia in 2022 under Coach Park Hang-seo’s guidance.
Furthermore, Vietnam’s 13 consecutive victories in Southeast Asia have far exceeded the streaks of rivals such as Indonesia (1968-1969), Thailand (1995-1996), and Singapore (2004-2005) – all of which ended at 9 matches.
The win against Malaysia allowed Vietnam to finish the AFC 2027 Asian Nations Cup qualifying in first place in Group F with 18 points, securing the sole ticket for the final phase.
