Back in competition on March 19 after suffering an ankle sprain in October, Malick Fofana has undergone surgery again, as indicated by OL on Monday.
Malick Fofana back in surgery. This Monday, OL indicated that the Belgian international “underwent a benign surgical intervention” on his right ankle “to remove the surgical material put in place during his operation last October”. On October 26, the winger suffered a serious sprain against Strasbourg. An injury that kept him away from the field for over four months.
The Belgian winger had been feeling pain in the same affected ankle in November. At that time, the severe sprain diagnosed had been treated with surgery, whereas this type of injury is usually treated with a brace. With advancements in medicine, it now requires an operation to repair the interosseous ligaments known as syndesmosis. This surgical procedure was performed on Malick Fofana in October but now he requires another surgery.
Out against Angers, at least
After this new operation, the Lyonnais club does not specify the duration of Fofana’s unavailability, who has just rejoined the group. But at least, the Belgian will be out against Angers this Sunday (3 pm). In their final stretch, OL had hoped to have their attacker back, along with other players who have been absent for extended periods like Afonso Moreira, Pavel Sulc, or Ruben Kluivert. The 20-year-old player, with 55 Ligue 1 matches in his young career, had resumed collective training in early March before being included in the list of players selected for the Europa League Round of 16 second leg against Celta de Vigo. Coming on for eight minutes against the Spaniards, he then played five minutes against Monaco in Ligue 1, in OL’s last match before the international break.
After a run of 13 consecutive wins, the Lyonnais have not won in their last eight matches in all competitions. Eliminated from the Coupe de France and the Europa League, Paulo Fonseca’s players have slipped to 4th place in Ligue 1 and have been seeking a win since February 15 (2-0 against Nice). A turnaround is expected on Angers’ pitch this Sunday (3 pm) to try to break this negative spiral.
