Around 3,000 events took place at the fairgrounds and all over the city during the four days of the Leipzig Book Fair 2026 from March 19 to 22. Those who entered the Leipzig Trade Fair grounds immediately felt that this book fair was larger, more colorful, and more international than ever before. This year, exhibitors from 54 countries came to Leipzig – more than ever before – including, for the first time, from the Congo and the United Arab Emirates.
The theme “Where Stories Connect Us” was not an empty promise but a lived reality in every hall. People with different attitudes, interests, and reading habits came together – all united by a passion for reading. Astrid Böhmisch, Director of the Leipzig Book Fair, emphasized that this year more exhibitors from more countries than ever before presented their literature in Leipzig – the place where stories unite people and different reading habits come together. Walking through the aisles, one could feel that this meeting point is much more than just a fair. It is a feeling.
When visiting the book fair, one realizes that the atmosphere is unique. Among overflowing signing tables, spontaneous panel discussions, and the rustling of freshly opened books, a unique pull is created – a feeling that is hard to put into words. Perhaps it is because the book fair functions similarly to a well-functioning digital ecosystem: each area has its own rules, its own community, its own currency of attention and the joy of discovery.
The Leipzig Book Fair is a fixed date in the industry calendar for many exhibitors. The direct exchange allows for feedback, trend observation, and intense conversations. This makes Leipzig special: here, literature is not a commodity but a conversation.
In 2026, the focus was not on a single country but on a river: the Danube. It flows through ten countries in Europe, connecting East and West, shaping landscapes and people. In 24 events, the book fair dedicated itself to this theme on its own stage under the motto “Danube – Under Power and Between Worlds.”
The excitement is palpable when the Leipzig Book Fair Prize is announced. The prize, endowed with 60,000 euros, has been awarded since 2005 by a seven-member jury of renowned literary critics in the categories of Fiction, Non-Fiction / Essays, and Translation.
Big names like Julia Quinn and new talents were highlighted at the fair, showcasing a wide range of genres. From Fantastik to Manga and Cosplay, the fair catered to all interests. New formats such as discussions on Artificial Intelligence, the world of Audio, and interactions with Film were also included in the program.
The conclusion is clear: Leipzig reads – and does so with passion. The largest reading festival in Europe, “Leipzig liest,” made the city vibrate with more than 3,000 events, proving the power of literature to bring people together. The next Leipzig Book Fair is already scheduled for 2027, from March 18 to 21. Mark your calendars and secure your tickets early if you want to be a part of it.
