According to Donald Trump, the outcome of the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran is currently positive. The White House tenant boasted on Sunday of having achieved a “regime change in Iran”. He also claimed to have negotiated the passage of 20 oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz – a vital passage point for the oil trade – “in the coming days” with the new officials of the Islamic Republic.
Oil prices continue to soar
However, not everyone shares the American president’s enthusiasm. In the United States, concerns are growing about a possible American entanglement in the Middle East. Oil prices have resumed their surge and Wall Street experienced a significant decline last week. Moreover, the objectives of the war initiated by Donald Trump remain unclear, and thousands of American soldiers have been deployed to the region in recent days.
Despite this military deployment around Iran, the American leader still hints at the possibility of an imminent peace agreement. “I think we will reach an agreement with them, I’m almost certain,” he said during a press conference on Air Force One.
The mystery surrounding Mojtaba Khamenei
Donald Trump attempted to reassure by claiming to have already achieved a change in the nature of power in Tehran, thanks to the strikes that killed the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and many senior officials of the Islamic Republic. “We can already see it, because the first regime has been decimated, destroyed, they are all dead,” he estimated. “The next regime,” named shortly after the death of Ayatollah Khamenei, “is mostly dead,” he remarked.
Designated to succeed Ali Khamenei, his son Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen since he was supposed to be at the helm of the country. “No one has heard of him. He may be alive, but he is clearly in a very, very serious situation,” continued Donald Trump. According to him, this situation has led de facto to the establishment of a “third regime” in Iran. “We are dealing with different people than anyone has ever dealt with before,” he summarized. “It’s a whole different group of people, so I would consider it a regime change.”
