Windows 11 to Reduce RAM and Storage Consumption by Up to 20%

Microsoft is working on reducing the RAM consumption and storage space taken up by Windows 11 by up to 20%. This development is expected to benefit budget-friendly laptops as prices rise and configurations are scaled down.

Mustafa Suleyman Parakhin from Microsoft shared this information, highlighting a new optimization project aimed at significantly lightening Windows in terms of both memory and disk space.

For laptops, this optimization is crucial as Windows 11 is currently quite demanding, which directly affects machines with lower RAM or storage capacity.

With laptop prices on the rise and set to continue in 2026, users are facing a paradoxical situation: more expensive machines, but sometimes less well-equipped.

In this scenario, a lighter Windows system could partially offset this trend.

A 20% reduction in memory footprint at rest – as well as disk usage – would allow for better performance on modest configurations, improving startup speed and relieving storage, which can quickly become overwhelmed.

However, Microsoft has previously explored this type of optimization without significant results, so caution is advised regarding the timeline and actual gains in practice.

Nevertheless, in a competitive market where components are more expensive and configurations are decreasing, software optimization could once again become a key factor in maintaining a good user experience on laptops.
