Garmin Forerunner 970: Review in Two Minutes

The Forerunner has been used for over nine months – long enough to thoroughly evaluate it. It accompanied weekly 5km runs, tempo sessions, interval workouts, long training runs for the half marathon, and even a particularly challenging 10km trail race last summer. This is a powerful, performance-focused device, perfect for training and analyzing your stats – even if it’s one of the pricier running watches on the current market.

  • Price: Starting from 749.99 Euros
  • Colors: Several color options available with customization

The Garmin Forerunner 970 was launched in May 2025 and is available directly from Garmin and most major retailers. It succeeds the Forerunner 965 released in March 2023, with a higher price of about 100 Euros compared to its predecessor. It is undeniable that these watches are becoming increasingly expensive.

However, considering the improvements dedicated to running, design adjustments, and slightly increased battery life, the 970 offers a coherent price-to-quality ratio.

Garmin Forerunner 970: Design

  • Sporty and rugged design
  • Lightweight
  • Scratch-resistant glass

Garmin watches oriented towards lifestyle, like the Venu and Vivoactive series, have often been favored in the past. Thinner and more refined, they can be worn both at the gym and for evening outings.

Therefore, upon first use of the 970, the difference was immediately noticeable. The case appears thicker and gives off a more serious “runner” vibe rather than just a step tracker. It seems slightly bulky at first, but in reality, with 56 grams, it never feels too heavy.

Aesthetically, it is particularly successful. The tested model combined smooth gold titanium with a French gray / translucent indigo strap, striking a balance between sportiness and elegance. Other color options are available, and it is possible to customize the look for a more sporty or daring appearance.

The bright and clear AMOLED screen is embedded in a 1.4-inch sapphire lens, framed by a titanium bezel – an improvement over the Garmin Forerunner 965 which used Corning Gorilla Glass 3 DX. The only drawback: a slight delay when scrolling, with the display sometimes taking a moment to catch up.

Previous connected watches have often been scratched, especially during weightlifting sessions. So, it’s reassuring that this model is scratch-resistant. After nine months of intense training and gym sessions, it still looks almost new.

Garmin Forerunner 970: Features

  • Added evening report
  • Slightly improved battery life
  • Triathlon training

The watch integrates all the expected features of a Garmin Forerunner. A vast library of workouts is available, including up to eight running modes, cycling, swimming, and strength training. As always with Garmin, the GPS proves to be particularly accurate, even in dense urban areas. Health indicators are comprehensive: sleep tracking, step count, Body Battery, VO2 max, and detailed heart rate data are easily accessible and analyzable through the app.

A few new features are also present. An integrated LED light proved useful during winter outings. A speaker and microphone allow for making calls directly from the wrist. However, the volume was quite low during tests.

The new Evening Report feature positively stood out. After appreciating Morning Reports on the Vivoactive 6, this evening version proved equally relevant. After long runs, it provides a clear summary of the day’s workload and encourages slowing down at the right times, with personalized recommendations for the next day’s training. For those juggling a structured plan and a busy schedule, it is a relevant addition.

Among the new running features are tracking running economy and foot strike speed loss, which require simultaneous use of the Garmin HRM 600 chest strap. Triathletes will also appreciate the new Triathlon Coach feature, allowing for a comprehensive training plan in swimming, cycling, and running to stay organized leading up to a competition.

Battery life is slightly improved compared to the previous model. In GPS mode, the Forerunner 965 lasted about two hours less than the 970 in comparative tests. However, during particularly intensive training weeks, more frequent recharges were needed than those announced by Garmin.
